Megan sat, with a glass of wine in hand, on the old second-hand sofa she and Natalie had found at the thrift store when her roommate arrived home that night.

"Sister Megan!" Natalie exclaimed in her best Mother Superior voice, "the amount of wine you've been drinking makes me think you have a problem. Overindulgence is a sin you know. Should I organize an intervention?"

Megan managed a smile as Natalie took a glass from the bench and poured herself a generous serve of merlot. She came and sat down next to her.

"Cheers." She clinked glasses with Megan. "Here's to overindulgence. We can both pray for forgiveness tonight."

Natalie's humor was what attracted Megan to her. She loved that within a world of seriousness Natalie laughed at the rules and expectations she found stifling. When they'd first met it surprised Megan that Natalie was religious, let alone had lived the life of a nun. But living with her had removed any doubts she had. Caring, compassionate and absolutely devoted to prayer and God. She broke the mold of stereotypes that surrounded nuns.

"So why the glum face?"

"Room six told me she wanted to pursue a relationship today."

Natalie's eyes widened. "That's fantastic, isn't it?"

"Her ex-girlfriend told me a few hours earlier that she's moving back in with her and it's the happiest day of her life."

"Oh." Natalie sipped her wine.

"That's all? I hoped you'd have wise words to console me with."

"We both know you'd never move forward with something for personal gain at the expense of someone else. I wish I could tell you something to make you feel better but there's not really anything."

Megan sighed. "I know. Actually, I should remind myself that only a short time before she suggested we meet up once she's discharged, I'd accepted the fact that it wasn't the right timing for us. I need to sort myself out and be released from the church before I act on anything. Deep down I know there'll be another Emily out there for me. I have to be patient."

"And that's something us holy folk are good at," Natalie said. "If it's any consolation I think you are doing the right thing and I think the Big Boss," she crossed herself, "would be proud of you."

Megan colored. "I'm not so sure about that. Some of the thoughts I've had lately are probably making his hair curl."

Natalie laughed. "Well, you can cause Father Walters hair to curl on Sunday when you confess."

Megan groaned. "Last time he asked me for so much specific detail. It was highly inappropriate."

"There are two confessionals. I'll go first and sniff out which one he's in. It's always pretty easy to work out. His aroma is undesirably distinct."

"That's for sure." Megan smiled. "Hey, thanks, Nat. You've been an amazing friend through this. No judgment, no horror about living with a..." she stopped.

"A what?" Natalie's voice was gentle. "Come on Megan, you can say the word. No one's going to bite."

Yes, she needed to embrace who she was. She was no longer a servant of God.
